Fanny Waugh was aneducated lady and member of the genteel propertied classes. William Holman Hunt,a deeply religious man but ambitious man eventually asked for her hand aftermuch shilly-shallying over his model Annie Miller. Hunt replaced Annie Miller'sface with Fanny's in many of his paintings. Poor Fanny married Hunt on therebound but enjoyed only one year of marriage. He set off to Jerusalem with herwhen she was pregnant but she only made it as far as Florence, dying there ofpurpureal anaemia after the birth of her child. Hunt went on to marry her sisterEdith.
